Hiking in Mallorca - and through the Serra de Tramuntana
Criss-crossing the Serra de Tramuntana, an impressive mountain range in the northwest of Mallorca, are numerous signposted hiking routes with great views of the sea and mountains such as the Puig Major, at 1445 metres the highest elevation on the island.
If you are physically fit, you can hike through the Torrent de Pareis gorge, for example. This spectacular gorge in the Serra de Tramuntana is the second largest gorge in the Mediterranean. In the riverbed of the eponymous torrent, which does not always have water, hikers have to do some real climbing and sometimes even swim after rainy days.
But that's not all! Here are five ideas for hikes of different levels of difficulty where travellers can experience nature up close in the Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca.
Hike to the Castell d'Alaró
From the "Es Verger" inn, famous for its lamb recipes, take a pleasant hike up to the fortress. The hike up the 822-metre Puig d'Alaró takes about an hour. In the summer of 2010, the section of path was upgraded to become part of the GR 221 long-distance hiking trail - from Port d'Andratx to Pollença.
The fort on the summit was once one of Mallorca's bulwarks and is said to have withstood the Moors' siege for eight years before being conquered. At the end of this rocky path, on which the holm oaks cast long shadows, a panoramic view of the Serra de Tramuntana awaits hikers at Castell d'Alaró.
Back down at the inn, hungry hikers can fortify themselves with hearty dishes or cakes after the tour.

On the circular trail around the panoramic peak Puig des Tossals Verds, hikers enjoy the most beautiful views of the island's mountains and the rugged cliffs of Mallorca. The varied trail offers everything that makes hiking in Mallorca so wonderful: steep hiking paths, magnificent views of rugged peaks as well as sparkling mountain lakes.
However, the demanding five-hour round hike around the Tossals Verds is quite demanding and hikers need good hiking boots. During the hike, several metres of altitude have to be mastered through impassable terrain on sometimes barely recognisable trails. The circular trail leads through wild gorges, crosses rocky ridges, wide scree fields and steep slopes. In two places, climbing is required on steep rock faces!
The starting and finishing point of the hike is the car park at the Sa Font Noguer picnic area. The hike is not recommended after rainfall in Mallorca - it becomes too slippery and it is also not possible to cross the Torrent d'Almedra gorge.
Comparison The ten best hiking backpacks
30.04.2021 A hike through fantastic landscapes quickly becomes a torment if the backpack's carrying straps cut ugly into the skin on your shoulders, the large water bottle barely fits inside or a rain cover is missing. That's why we have tested the ten best hiking backpacks. Hiking on Mallorca - from bathing bay to bathing bay
On the easy tour from Banyalbufar to Port des Canonge, hikers can safely pack their swimsuits instead of functional clothing. The route offers a special form of beach hopping: the signposted path leads from a car park near Banyalbufar through dense pine forest, in which the spicy scent of resin is in the air, and past several beaches on the edge of the Tramuntana mountains. The hike takes just under two hours, if you count the pure walking time.
Since most of the bathing spots are wonderful, you should plan enough breaks for swimming during the hike. In Port des Canonge, you can get the impression of having stumbled into another time, so original is the tiny fishing village.

The circular walk around the Santuari de Santa Maria de Lluc pilgrimage site is ideal for those sensitive to heat, as the hike leads mainly through oak forests. The "stone camel", an eroded limestone rock, and the summit of the Moleta de Binifaldó are the highlights of the approximately two-hour hike in Mallorca.
Children will especially enjoy the bizarre stone formations on the island, which invite them to climb around. From the summit of the Moleta de Binifaldó, hikers can enjoy a unique view over the hilly landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana.
After a successful hike, the monastery Santuari de Lluc is worth a stop. It also has a good restaurant where weary hikers can find refreshments.

You get a real mountaineering feeling on the tour from the Cuber reservoir to Sóller. At least in the first part of the hike, where the 1090-metre-high Puig de l'Ofre has to be conquered, the last part of the ascent is steep.
The descent through the ravishingly beautiful Biniaraix gorge, on the other hand, is gentle. The stair-like path is part of an old pilgrimage route on which Mallorcans have been walking through the gorge of their island praying and singing for more than 600 years. Yellow-flowering broom bushes are fragrant along the way, and the hike leads through a wooded area and past pale limestone rocks.
The tour takes about four and a half hours. From Sóller you take the bus back to the starting point at the Cuber reservoir. Caution: In the rain, the path becomes extremely slippery!

A dreamlike hike with one of the most idyllic bays in Mallorca as its destination is the tour from Sóller to Cala Tuent. The natural, 200-metre-wide pebble bay is located around 5.5 nautical miles north of the port of Sóller between Sa Costera and Sa Calobra. A good basic level of fitness is required for the difficult hike, and hikers should plan five hours for the almost 14-kilometre route.
The hike leads along firm hiking trails and mountain paths through olive groves and alpine terrain. The last part of the trail leads close to the coast, there are always tempting views of the sea before the descent to the beach. From Cala Tuent, the trail then leads to the village of the same name, Tuent, and from there by bus back to the starting point.
